Penumbra Guidelines
Submissions are open from June 23rd to July 23rd.
- Each person can submit no more than a total of 2 submissions. Example: 1 poetry and 1 art piece counts as 2 submissions.
- Word count for fiction/non-fiction is 1500 words.
- Poetry pieces can be no more than 500 words.
- Audio and video files cannot surpass 10 minutes.
- Reviews word count should be between 600 to 900 words.
- Reviews must end with a sign-off of the submitter’s name and academic affiliation.
- Reviews must be of recent works (within the last year).
- Reviews must be emailed not posted on Submittable (see the “call for reviews” page on Penumbra Online).
- Written works need to be submitted as Word Docs: NO PDF files will be accepted.
- Art pieces need to be submitted as .jpeg files and in the best resolution possible.
- Each piece must be in a separate document/submission to be considered.
- Titles must appear the same way in all parts of the submission to prevent confusion.
- We require specific content warnings in submissions (this is necessary in our other publications as well) “warnings must accurately reflect the content in submitted work.”
- All submitted works must be original and unpublished. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable.
- Once accepted, submitters CANNOT withdraw their pieces. If your piece is accepted elsewhere, the other publisher must credit our journal as the original publisher.
- No images depicting bodily harm, including the harm of animals; can result in a complete ban from the journal.
- No racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, islamophobic, ableist, content or language (etc.) Nothing that furthers hate or oppressive rhetoric and practices.
